RVC Clark Jones's Monthly Column - August 2007

Wow! The Birmingham AG was excellent! I only wish that I hadn't had to spend so much time on AMC related stuff. You may have heard that there was a change in management of the AG at the last minute. There are details of what happened on the us.mensa.org website, and if you have any interest in this sort of thing, I strongly suggest that you read that material. It is unfortunate that several folks have seen fit to circulate some vicious comments without bothering to find out the facts. Suffice it to say, though, that the folks who managed to pull together in just a few short days what would have been a very good Hospitality Suite under any circumstances. Given the limited time they had, they did a wonderful job.

Region 9 took a good number of the PRP awards. (I drove to the AG, and as I write this I've not made it home yet, so don't have the exact number.) I have quite a "flock" of the owl-shaped awards to deliver to folks who didn't make it to the AG, including several for Doug Miller.

Being Regional Vice Chairman has certainly been an educational experience in the few days that I've held the position so far. I know that a few weeks ago I was only vaguely aware of most of the resources that are available on the national web site. Whether you've got a leadership position, or are a new member, or have been a member for decades, a few minutes looking over the web site is time well invested. The web site has content ranging from games, bylaws, guides on resolving conflicts, newsletters for many groups, handbooks for many of the "jobs" within Mensa, to the AMC's "Actions Still In Effect" (ASIEs). Ever wonder what AGs have been awarded for coming years? The AMC actions awarding the 2009, 2010, and 2011 are buried in the ASIEs (or the 2011 award soon will be).

The next Annual Gathering, in 2008, will be much closer to home for us in Region 9: Denver is the venue. I am certainly looking forward to it. Colorado would make an excellent place to have a vacation, with the AG as the "crowning jewel". I know that I'm already thinking about my plans for next summer.

If you need to get in touch with me, please feel free to do so. E-mail is generally best, but "snail mail" or telephone will work too. (If you get my answering machine, please leave a message and I'll call you back.)
