If you haven't heard the election results, I (Clark Jones) have been elected as RVC9. Since Doug Miller left for Baghdad in May, Russ Bakke has asked that I immediately assume the duties of RVC9.
First, I want to thank everyone who voted, both those who voted for me to have the office and those who voted to help me keep a couple years of my life (by voting for one of my opponents). I also want to congratulate Ronald Kaufman and Cary Chilson on their winning their next two years of freedom. (I expect that there will be moments in the next two years when I'll envy both of you!) I am looking forward to serving all of the Mensans in Region 9, and doing so to the best of my abilities. Joking aside, it is a privilege to be entrusted with this office.
I want to thank Doug Miller for his service, both as RVC9, and for the service that he'll be giving in Iraq. I hope that all of you who read this will keep Doug in your thoughts, and if you're so inclined, your prayers, for his safe return home. While we're at it, let's include all of the Allied personnel, both civilian and military, in both Iraq and Afghanistan, in those thoughts and prayers, regardless of our individual feelings about these wars.
I am certainly looking forward to meeting many more of you, and to working with the Local Group Officers. Region 9 has a lot of exciting things going on, and in looking over some of the newsletters from our 12 local groups, I wish I had access to a "teleportation unit" (maybe like the one from Star Trek) so that I could attend more of the activities. Although most of the members of Region 9 live within a day's drive from Phoenix, we also have a far-flung "Local" group: Mensa Hawaii, that straddles the International Date Line, and even has an officer (a proctor) in Guam.
One random thought is that I found out the election results on the 63rd anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Europe. I certainly hope that's just an interesting coincidence.
Just before the deadline for this, I heard from Doug, and he pointed out that Region 9 has gotten a lot of the PRP (Publication Recognition Program) nominations this year, 39 out of a total of 123 nominations, or nearly 32%. Great work by all involved!
As a final thought for this month, I'd like to remind you that Mensa is its members. Virtually every event in Mensa is due to the efforts of volunteers within the organization, and the events are only successful if members attend. I urge everyone to get the most out of their membership by participating.
If you need to get in touch with me, please feel free to do so. E-mail is generally best, but "snail mail" or telephone will work too. (If you get my answering machine, please leave a message and I'll call you back.)
