RVC Clark Jones's Monthly Column - November 2007

One of the "perqs" of being RVC is that you get to know about the upcoming RGs before they become public. It looks like 2008 is shaping up to be a pretty good year when it comes to Gatherings in Region 9. We'll start off with GLAAM's RG the weekend of Feb. 15 through 19, then MindGames the weekend of April 11 through 13 in Phoenix. San Diego Mensa is working on an RG, and Tucson Mensa is teaming up with Borderline Mensa for another RG. (More about these latter two events in coming months!) And, of course, the 2008 AG is going to be in Denver; easy driving distance for many parts of Region 9. (By the way, if you're planning on going to the AG in Denver, or for that matter, any American Mensa AG, it's best to book your room reservations as early as possible. The "main" hotel usually fills up quickly, and although there's usually an "overflow" hotel nearby, it's less convenient to be there.)

Speaking of events in 2008, I'd really like to have a Leadership Development Workshop (LDW), probably somewhere in Southern California. However, I need to find someone to be "boots on the ground", to help organize it. An especially important part of this is to find a venue for it. If you are at all interested, please download and look over the LDW Handbook, which is available at us.mensa.org and then send me some e-mail.

At the AMC meeting in September, one of the topics of discussion was the proliferation of "social interaction" web sites, such as Facebook, and how we might use them to communicate with and support our members. Several of us have gotten onto Facebook, and there is now an "American Mensa" group there. There's also a Mensa group with a more international flavor.

I'd be interested in hearing which, if any, of the websites the Region 9 members are on. If you'd like to tell me, please send me a brief e-mail, preferably with "Survey" in the subject line, and in the body of the message let me know which of sites like Facebook, MySpace, SecondLife, etc., you're on, and roughly how many times you actually logged in to each in the month of October. Also, I'd appreciate a guess as to how many "face-to-face" Mensa events you attended to in the first ten months of 2007. (For example, I might put in the body "Facebook 10 times in October, about 40 Mensa events the first ten months of 2007".) Even if your response would be "none and none", at least I know that somebody is reading my column! Oh, yes, also indicate which local group you're in.

If you need to get in touch with me, please feel free to do so. E-mail is generally best, but "snail mail" or telephone will work too. (If you get my answering machine, please leave a message and I'll call you back.)
