I want to encourage you to visit region9.us.mensa.org which is the Region 9 website. I recently updated it, and I'll be the first to admit that it's not flashy. However, it has info on the Region 9 "Attendance Competition", both the Rules and the Entry Form. I have also put some "biographical info" on yours truly, in case you really want to know more about me. There are also links there for each of the twelve groups in Region 9.
As you may be aware, I live in a town called Gilbert, Arizona. I've had a couple of people wonder where Gilbert is located. It's a suburb of Phoenix, on the southeast side. If you know where Mesa is, Gilbert is south of Mesa. I actually live about 3/4 mile south of the Mesa-Gilbert border.
In a way it is exciting to look through all of the newsletters from Region 9 each month, and see all of the interesting activities. It a way, though, it is a bit frustrating for me, because I can only be in one place at once!
I've been hearing "noises", though, about both the lack of attendance, and the decrease in the number of events. I've been hearing this from many sources: other AMC members (especially some other RVCs), editors of some of the Region 9 newsletters, and some of the other officers of the local groups in Region 9. Indeed, at least one editor published an editorial on the decrease in events. That editorial brought a flurry of letters to the editor about the demise of particular events, or the lack of events in a particular area. One thing that strikes me about these letters to the editor is that it's almost as much trouble to send a letter to the editor as it is to send a note to the calendar editor saying "I'd like to meet at [my favorite] restaurant at [pick a time] on [pick a day]", then show up at the restaurant at the time and day. Viola! You've just started a new event! Even if nobody shows up, you've had a good excuse to go to your favorite place. Many events are in people's homes, which is good, but many also are at restaurants or other public places. I realize that there are folks, who due job commitments or physical handicaps can't do something like this, but most of us can. And if your favorite event suddenly disappears, contact the previous host - they might like someone to take over the event. Please remember that Mensa is its members - every event is hosted by members, and members run the club. The success of Mensa is entirely dependent upon its members.
Under upcoming Regional events, Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa is planning an RG for Feb. 15-18, 2008. and Greater Phoenix Mensa will be hosting MindGames April 11-13, 2008. While not quite in Region 9, the 2008 AG is going to be in Denver, July 2-6.
If you need to get in touch with me, please feel free to do so. E-mail is generally best, but "snail mail"or telephone will work too. (If you get my answering machine, please leave a message and I'll call you back.)
